Road safety while walking to school

- Ensure that you are keeping to the footpath. In case you are walking on a road with no footpath, keep on the far right-hand side of the road.

- Exercise patience while crossing the road. Do not run when crossing the road. Running while crossing the road may cause you to trip and fall, thus exposing you to a myriad of dangers.

- Only cross the road on sections that have zebra crossing, foot bridges, traffic lights and subways. If these facilities are not accessible at the point you want to cross the road, search for a safe spot to cross the road. When crossing the road at a section with traffic lights, wait for the lights to turn green before crossing. On the other hand, if you are crossing the road at a section managed by a traffic policeman, only cross after being signaled.

- Do not cross the road at roundabouts or bends. Crossing a road at a bend means that you cannot see an oncoming car.

- If you want to cross a road and have to pass in-between cars parked on the roadside, note that you are not conspicuous to oncoming traffic. This because you could be shorter than the cars parked on the sides. Hence, before crossing the road, stop and look for oncoming traffic. Remember, automobile drivers require a lot of time to notice you and slow down their pace to allow you to cross the road safely.

- If you are crossing broad roads which have central islands, remember to cross in two phases. The first stage entails crossing to the central island, stopping to check if it’s clear to cross the road again, then crossing to the other end.

- Vehicles plying one-way roads usually move at high speeds. Therefore, you need to make sure that the roads are clear before crossing.
