Silent Knight Launches “How-To” Video Series

Silent Knight Launches “How-To” Video Series

New videos offered by Silent Knight compliment online trainings, offering technical support alternatives, particularly for mobile viewers.
Silent Knight by Honeywell has expanded the free fire alarm training and technical support it offers by developing a series of “How-To” videos, covering the most common topics addressed by its Technical Support Team.
Easy to find and easy to view on mobile devices, Silent Knight’s How-To videos demonstrate, step-by-step, how to program a fire alarm control panel for elevator recall, troubleshoot ground faults and more. Each video runs less than three minutes in length and is free to view on www.silentknight.com and YouTube. Given the How-To videos’ quick rise in popularity, Silent Knight’s VP of Sales, Mike Fischer, affirms more are in the works.
“People like being able to go right to our Website and see a quick demo of how something should work, along with steps for getting there,” states Fischer.
To answer the call of its customers wanting more comprehensive training on a particular product or subject, Silent Knight has created online training courses and tutorials. Certificates of completion are mailed to participants for each of the seven online courses, providing they pass the quiz at the conclusion of each training session. This year, more than 700 certificates have been issued.

“You do these online trainings at your own pace. Technicians can get a lot out of them and they’re good for those in-house staff that business owners might want to better educate on their product lines,” Fischer says.
To view Silent Knight’s new How-To videos or take an online training course, visit www.silentknight.com. Silent Knight systems are non-proprietary, sold over-the-counter at most major security equipment distributors throughout the U.S. Contact a local Regional Manager for information on nearby distributors of Silent Knight equipment.

Mobile Browsers Susceptible to Dangerous Websites

Mobile Browsers Susceptible to Dangerous Websites

According to a recent study by Georgia Tech, even cyber-security experts are unable to determine when their smartphone browsers land on potentially dangerous websites.
Mobile browsers incorporate cryptographic tools and a range of security in order to provide secure Web-browsing, but that security is not enough. All of the leading mobile browsers fail to meet security guidelines recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This lack of security leaves even expert users unable to if websites they visit are real or imposter sites phishing for personal data.
“We found vulnerabilities in all 10 of the mobile browsers we tested, which together account for more than 90 percent of the mobile browsers in use today in the United States,” said Patrick Traynor, assistant professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Computer Science. “The basic question we asked was, ‘Does this browser provide enough information for even an information-security expert to determine security standing?’ With all 10 of the leading browsers on the market today, the answer was no.”
The graphic icons at issue are called either SSL (“secure sockets layer”) or TLS (“transport layer security”) indicators, which alert users when connection to destination websites is secure and that the website in view is the correct site viewers intended to visit. The tiny “lock” icon that typically appears in a desktop browser window when users are providing payment information in an online transaction is one example of an SSL indicator. Another is the “https” keyword that appears in the beginning of a desktop browser’s URL field.
For mobile browsers, the ability to incorporate SSL indicators is much more difficult to do because there simply isn’t enough room to incorporate SSL indicators in same way as with desktop browsers. Given that mobile devices are widely predicted to face more frequent attacks from cyber-criminals, the vulnerability is almost sure to lead to increased cyber-crime unless it is addressed.
“Research has shown that mobile browser users are three times more likely to access phishing sites than users of desktop browsers,” said Chaitrali Amrutkar, a Ph.D. student in the School of Computer Science and principal author of the paper that described the SSL research. “Is that all due to the lack of these SSL indicators? Probably not, but giving these tools a consistent and complete presence in mobile browsers would definitely help.”
The paper,“Measuring SSL Indicators on Mobile Browsers: Extended Life, or End of the Road,” is essentially a measurement analysis of the current state of visual security indicators in mobile browsers, and is a necessary first step in developing a uniform set of security recommendations that can apply to mobile browsers.

Grundig’s standalone NVR wins “Best New Product” at Moscow’s prestigious All-over IP exhibition and forum.

Grundig_NVR_pic

Grundig attended the “All over IP” exhibition and forum, in Moscow in November, which is supported by many of the world’s leading security product manufacturers including Axis, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and JVC. Key decision-makers from Russia’s leading system integrators and end-users visit the show to evaluate the latest product and service developments in the security industry.
It was within this highly competitive environment that Grundig was announced winner in the “Best New Product” category at the show, for its ground-breaking, standalone NVR range.
With 4, 8 and 16 channel options, the NVR range leads the industry with its Full HD, 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution video at 25 FPS per channel, in both live and playback modes. An embedded Linux operating system, developed by Grundig to provide a secure, stable and reliable platform, is tailored to the unique demands of security system applications.
“The specification is amongst the best in the industry,” explains Andreas Kronwald, product manager responsible for the NVR development. “Video quality and simple installation have been the focus of our entire new product development process. Indeed, it was the NVR’s simple installation in end-to-end IP applications that really impressed the judges. Each NVR comes with a built-in PoE switch, allowing direct IP camera connection. Grundig IP cameras are auto-detected and auto-configured by the NVR, including applying IP addresses and configuring the video streams. This feature, combined with pre-defined, default recording settings in the NVR which are suitable for a majority of CCTV applications, ensures a complete Grundig CCTV system can be set up and commissioned in minutes, with no specific IT training required.”
Standard functionality includes PTZ control, “Smart Timeline”, 3 click export for back up to USB or FTP, event and thumbnail search, automatic archiving of critical data and remote access. User access management is for up to 8 user clients, as well as flexible event activation by motion, alarm, video-loss and system alerts.
Connections include up to 16 Ethernet video inputs, HDMI video output, up to 16 IP audio input channels with one RCA output.

Luminite supplies Optex with RF wireless communications.

Luminite supplies Optex with RF wireless communications.

Luminite wireless RF transmission is Optex PIRs
Luminite, manufacturer of Genesis wireless PIR detection systems, now supplies radio-frequency (RF) transmitter modules to Optex Europe. The modules are used to enable wireless communications in the Optex SIP WF PIR detector range. Luminite is widely acknowledged as the industry leader in wireless PIR systems for event-driven CCTV, having developed the technology for its own Genesis range. The supply agreement is a further endorsement of Luminite’s place in the market.
“Optex has a significant share of UK PIR detector sales,” explains Graham Creek, Managing Director of Luminite. “Supplying transmitter modules to Optex is not only recognition of the quality and robust nature of our RF wireless systems, but also an acceptance that wireless PIR technology is now an important and growing part of the professional, intruder detection market.
“Wireless detectors are much quicker to install than traditional, hard-wired systems and have less risk of error. They don’t require power or communication cable connections, so can be positioned on a site perimeter facing inwards, without incurring expensive civil work. The advantage of perimeter mounting is a compelling reason to use wireless PIRs as it significantly reduces the risk of false alarms from detection “overspill” and sunlight reflections.”
Luminite has developed its wireless transmitter module to fit inside Optex’s SIP housings. Critical alarm and tamper data, including intrusion detection, anti-shock and anti-cloaking are separately identifiable from system management alerts, like low PIR battery strength and weak wireless signals. PIR system intelligence of this type significantly increases the effectiveness and efficiency of CCTV systems, whilst further reducing the likelihood of false alarms.
A total of 64 Optex SIP PIRs can be used in each wireless system, when used with Luminite Masthead receivers. The wireless communication distance extends up to 1km and includes compatibility with all accessories in Luminite’s Genesis range, including enabling IP connectivity to CCTV control systems.

New version of TDSi’s TIMEgarde Time and Attendance Solution

New version of TDSi’s TIMEgarde Time and Attendance Solution

TDSi , a global leader in access control systems for all sizes of businesses and organisations announces the launch of the latest version of its TIMEgarde Time and Attendance software solution. TIMEgarde version 4 offers a number of key improvements including support for lunch breaks, rolling shifts, real-time reporting, faster installation and support for Windows 7 64-bit version.
TIMEgarde is web-based and provides Time and Attendance logging against user-defined working patterns by using identification through automated access control systems. TDSi Managing Director, John Davies, commented, “Featuring a powerful reporting tool, TIMEgarde gives you precisely the information that you need in an easy to understand format allowing you to maximise employee efficiency. The new version has been released to make it even easier to cater for the variations in working hours that are inevitable with modern work shifts and practices.”
The new version of TIMEgarde allows organisations to specify fixed lunch break periods and durations (which can then be deducted from the total work hours) but there is also the flexibility to override this if required. There is also support for rolling shifts that allows for working patterns that cross midnight for example and are therefore technically over two days/dates. To make running reports easier and faster TIMEgarde now calculates the hours as they are accrued and efficiently runs in the background so as not to monopolise the HR database all in one go as the report is run. This could be scheduled to run overnight for example, when system resources requirements are far more relaxed.
As well as being easier to use, TIMEgarde is now easier to install. To be installed in conjunction with SQL Sever for example used to require the installation of the SQL software before TIMEgarde. The new version includes an updated installer that checks for any pre-requisites and installs them along with any IIS configuration. TDSi has also recognised the continued migration of companies to Windows 7 64-bit and TIMEgarde is now also able to accommodate this as well as the 32-bit version.
Flexibility is the key to Time and Attendance and the ability to create multiple working times and assign any one of these to an individual ensures that TIMEgarde meets the needs of the particular business. Controlling absenteeism such as sickness, holidays and off-site working is paramount to managing resources effectively. TIMEgarde allows staff to enter absences remotely for later approval by departmental managers or HR staff. This fundamental HR functionality is ideally suited to smaller businesses. As well as working with more traditional card or token based access control readers, TIMEgarde can be used in conjunction with TDSi’s DIGIgarde Plus fingerprint readers. It offers an intuitive Time and Attendance package incorporating the latest in biometric identification technology, practically eliminating the risk of fraudulent clocking in and out of personnel.

Panasonic Announce New IWB Partnership with Nimans

Panasonic Announce New IWB Partnership with Nimans

PSCEU (Panasonic System Communications Company Europe) and Nimans, the UK’s leading telecommunications and data distribution specialist, have announced a new partnership to promote the Panasonic range of next generation interactive whiteboards (IWB).
Paul Osborn, Network Solutions Specialist at PSCEU commented; “The world of business systems is converging and with our latest whiteboard solution offering the best benefits available in the market, there is no better time for us to announce our partnership.”
Nimans is planning more ‘dealer interaction’ after adding next generation UB-T880, UB-T880W and the recently launched UB-T580 Panasonic interactive whiteboards to its 6,000 strong product range - delivering a new dimension in staff training.
Ideally suited to the education sector and corporate training facilities, the high impact technology is also being used to enhance reseller training at Nimans’ Manchester headquarters.
The company is planning to raise general awareness and bolster its in-house training programme throughout this year so that more customers can learn about the many sales opportunities available.
Nimans Head of Conferencing Sales, Ian Brindle, says the new and improved ‘Panaboard’ creates a dynamic way of learning. “By connecting a PC with internet access and a projector you can bring the wealth of information on the web into the classroom or training facility. It opens the door to a new kind of interactive, visual-based education, providing resellers with new and potentially lucrative revenue potential.”
Panasonic’s rugged surfaced, capacitive touch sensitive whiteboards – first launched in 2009 – have been hailed by users as ‘some of the greatest developments in IWB technology’. UB-T880 can be controlled by up to three users simultaneously and is supplied along with a suite of software packages making them suitable for commercial applications ranging from training, education and control centres to many other commercial applications.
The enhanced ‘Panaboard’, available in 78 and 86 inch screen sizes, offers video conferencing interaction and also wireless capabilities via an optional kit. The 2012 launch of the cost effective UB-T580 model further strengthens Panasonic’s grip in a highly competitive market.
Ian says whiteboard technology has revolutionised learning for resellers and internal staff. “The Panaboard is sophisticated yet simple to use and represents a massive leap forward, delivering a richly rewarding learning experience. This year will see us develop further ways of interacting with our customers based on an enhanced training programme where our own internal white board equipment takes centre stage.”
This is an exciting time for Panasonic and Nimans making the possibility of further market expansion a reality thanks to the combined customer support and distribution power of both organisations.

Trending on an increasing commercial use of audio monitoring and the benefits it holds for crime prevention, legal cases, and law enforcement agency response time, the Maryland Transit Administration authorized the use of audio monitoring devices on public buses. The new security system was deemed legal by the state attorney general's office, and a spokesman for the attorney general's office confirmed that transit officials were advised by their counsel that based on a 2000 appeals court decision, the audio recordings did not violate the state wiretapping law.
Still, the decision to record the conversations of bus drivers and passengers to investigate crimes, accidents, and poor customer service has come under attack from privacy advocates and state lawmakers who say it may go too far. David Rocah, a staff attorney with the Maryland chapter of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) represented a cynical, but well heard stand point - “People don’t want or need to have their private conversations recorded by MTA as a condition of riding a bus…”
Others are ecstatic to see the city’s commitment to public safety seeing public audio monitoring as non-intrusive and beneficial – “We want to make sure people feel safe, and this builds up our arsenal of tools to keep our patrons safe,” said Ralign Wells, the Maryland Transit Administration chief. “The audio completes the information package for investigators and responders.”
And that’s very true – audio monitoring devices are, in the least, a secure, second response device for the authorized dispatch of law enforcement. Furthermore, this initiative falls right in line with a number of harassment, abuse, and other criminal investigations that have been laid to rest through the use of audio monitoring security.
While the content of these investigations lie on a large spectrum, they truly represent the magnitude public safety being provided in lue of the conundrum that is public privacy.
At Louroe Electronics, we value our position as a knowledgeable on issues surrounding Audio Monitoring and the Law. We’ve picked up a wealth of experience over our 33 years in manufacturing audio monitoring equipment – large scale c
