PTZs vs 360 / Panoramics

One of the toughest but most important emerging choices is when to use PTZs vs panoramic cameras. It pits one of the most overhyped technologies of the past decade (PTZs) versus one of the most overhyped ones of this decade (panoramics), yet both have significant value as an alternative to fixed cameras.

Covering Larger Areas
Covering large areas with fixed cameras is problematic. Instead of using huge numbers of them, many users turn to PTZs so they can pan, tilt and zoom across such areas. But, clearly, this is not without downsides and misapplication. In the past few years, a new rival solution, panoramics, has emerged for covering them. Instead of mechanical control, these cameras, using multi-megapixel, capture and record a 'panoramic' view at all times. While some vendors hope for the 'death of PTZs', panoramics have many of their own issues.

Home Security Camera Surveillance

Things To Consider When Buying Home Security Cameras

Home security has become more imperative in recent years as records show increasing numbers of robberies and home invasions. It is easy to think it will never happen to you, but when it does, it shatters your sense of security in your own home. Not only is it likely you lose possessions but peace of mind goes out the door right along with them.

How do you prevent yourself from becoming the next target of burglars? It is proven that external security cameras, when sited properly, do act as a deterrent. Granted the professional burglar determined to invade your property may not be put off by a single camera, however will he really be willing to take the chance of being caught on camera?

Taking active steps to protect your home should be second nature and investing in and installing a security camera system is a good place to start.

When you come to buy security cameras there are several things to keep in mind. First of all you need to decide how many cameras you want and whether to use only external cameras, internal cameras or a combination of both. Obviously, external cameras must be bought for purpose, that is, they must be suitable for coping with all weather conditions. You might also consider whether you want your camera to be able to record images at night. If so you want what is termed night vision cameras.

You also need to consider whether you want a system that is wired in (hard wired) or one of the more modern wireless systems that easier and cheaper to install and are, in general more adaptable.

Siting of the cameras is crucial. They need to be placed high enough that any potential burglar cannot reach to deactivate them but also where they will cover the best areas. For example covering a door or window.

Internally, carefully work out where the best place is for siting your camera to cover vulnerable points. Entry points at doors and windows are evident but also consider hallways. As a general rule burglars will head directly to the master bedroom if they have gained access to your home. Mostly it is in the bedroom where most of us keep valuables like jewelry. Therefore a camera sited to cover the hallway outside your bedroom door could prove invaluable.

There are several other things you might want to think about. For example, do you want your camera to record live video or take so many frames per second photographs. Do you want it to record in black and white or in color? Black and white is cheaper but then the quality is poorer and the pictures can be blurry. That is fine if all you want is to know when an intruder is present, however they are less efficient in identifying culprits for future prosecution. Similarly with resolution, if you can buy a camera with the highest resolution you can afford to give you much clearer reproductions.

Also consider how you are going to store the video or images when they are taken. Be sure that the camera you pick has sufficient memory capacity to store 24 hours' worth of data. You might also start considering what happens to the data when it the memory limit is reached? Do you want it stored on the camera or sent to a hard drive elsewhere?

There are many things to consider when investing in home security cameras, but in the end, they are well worth the research you put into finding just the right one for you and your family.

Ethernet-Fiber Converters from Global e-Solutions

Ethernet-Fiber Converters enable connections of UTP copper-based ethernet equipment over a fiber optic link to take advantage of the benefits of fiber which include;
  • Extending links over greater distances using fiber optic cable
  • Protecting datafrom noise and interference
  • Future proofing your network with additional bandwidth capacity
Copper-based Ethernet connections are limited to a data transmission distance of only 100 meters when using unshielded twisted pair ( UTP ) cable. By using an ethernet to fiber conversion solution, fiber optic cabling can now be used to extend this link over a greater distance.
An Ethernet to Fiber Media Converter can also be used where there is high level of electromagnetic interference or EMI which is a common phenomenon found in industrial plants. This interference can cause corruption of data over copper-based ethernet links. Data transmitted over fiber optic cable however is completely immune to this type of noise. An Ethernet to Fiber Optic Converter therefore enables you to inter-connect your copper-ethernet devices over fiber ensuring optimal data transmission across the plant floor.
By utilizing ethernet to fiber media converters, the benefits of fiber optic cabling
can now be realized for copper–based ethernet infrastructures.

Benefits of Ethernet to Fiber Optic Converters

  • Protects your investment in existing copper ethernet-based hardware
  • Provides you with the flexibility to add fiber on a port-by-port basis
  • Enjoy the benefits of fiber without have to make wholesale changes
  • Fast ethernet or Gigabit ethernet to multi-mode or single mode
  • Ethernet to fiber and fiber back to ethernet links
  • Create copper-fiber connections with fiber switches

Media Converters for Ethernet to Fiber Links

The copper transceiver used in an Ethernet-Fiber Converter transforms the signal from a UTP / RJ45 ethernet link to one that can be used by a fiber optic transceiver. Media converters can connect to various optical fiber cable such as multimode, single mode or single strand fiber cable. Options exist for many distances to suit the needs of a particular ethernet to fiber application. And, fiber interface connectors can be dual ST, dual SC, dual LC or single SC type.
Ethernet to Fiber Media Converter models that are best suited for enterprise and Service Provider applications, offer an on-board processor that continuously monitors that both the copper and fiber connections are up. This functionality, generally referred to as "Link Pass-Through", monitors the state of the link to the end devices and to ensure that each end-point knows whether the entire link is up or not. Some media converter products do not have this intelligence and simply “nail up” the link even though the remote copper device may be down or the fiber link broken. With Link Passthrough functionality available in all Perle Ethernet to Fiber Optic Converters, the network’s SNMP management system can be alerted when a fault occurs so that corrective action can take place.

Hikvision Launches New 600TVL DIS Analog Cameras

Hikvision announces the release of its new and improved DIS series analog cameras – the DS-2CE1582P(N)-VFIR3 600TVL IR Bullet Camera and the DS-2CE5582P(N)-VFIR3 600TVL DIS IR Dome Camera. Both of these new, and affordable, analog models offer higher resolution and ultra low illumination, which instantly make them extremely competitive in overall analog camera market.

Developed by Hikvision, the DIS (Digital Image System) series boasts advanced features, such as image quality, power consumption, and greater overall system stability. Features such as these are helping Hikvision reinvent how customers view analog technology.

Additionally, both cameras in the DIS family feature a 1/3" DIS image sensor with 600TVL ultra-high horizontal resolution. Compared with conventional analog cameras, which only offer 480 / 540 TVL horizontal resolution, these new cameras provide higher video quality and improved image detail.

These units employ a vari-focal lens, which benefits users by allowing easier focusing without requiring any movement in the initial camera set-up.
